Game of Thrones: The Mad King

Being a GoT fan I was incredibly excited to see this play, especially when finding last minute tickets to the sold out run at the RSC! At 3 hours 40 (inc interval) it was an epic in every sense of the word. It told the prequel of the tv show’s main characters well, vividly bringing the world to life with clever lighting, beautiful costumes, an atmospheric score & some creative puppetry. It was technically very impressive, however I did feel that the production could have benefited with more rehearsal. The set pieces are so complicated, & the puppets so huge & unwieldy, that it felt like they weren’t at 100%. The huge fight scenes felt a bit lacklustre at times, but again, I felt the actors were still tentatively getting used to the choreography. The performances were generally very solid (which unfortunately highlighted the weaker ones more) & Duncan Macmillan’s script well written, although amusingly I think he relied on the word “mayhaps” too much! Overall, a very happy GoT fan!
