Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of terms

By creating an account or using First Night, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your personal data.

2. Use of the service

First Night is a platform for logging, rating and remembering the theatre you see. Please don't misuse it: no spamming, impersonating others, posting unlawful or abusive content, scraping or bulk-copying the site, or attempting to disrupt the platform or get around its security.

3. User accounts

You are responsible for keeping your account credentials secure. You must provide accurate information when creating an account. We may suspend or remove accounts that break these terms.

4. User content

You keep ownership of the content you create on First Night (such as logs, ratings, and notes). By posting it, you give us permission to store and display it as part of the service, including on shareable pages and images such as recap cards. You are responsible for making sure your content does not infringe anyone else's rights and is not unlawful, abusive, or harmful.

If you add a show or venue, or suggest a credit or correction, you agree that we can use the information you provide in the public catalogue once it has been reviewed. Catalogue information can stay in the catalogue after you delete your account, without being linked to you; any notes you left with it are deleted.

If you tag someone as a companion on a log, you are responsible for the details you enter about them. Only add an email address for someone who would be happy for us to hold it. Our Privacy Policy explains what we do with it.

5. Intellectual property

The First Night name and branding, and the site's original design and content, may not be reused without permission. Facts about shows, such as titles, dates, venues and cast, are not ours to own; much of it comes from public databases and third-party sources. Please don't reproduce or redistribute substantial parts of the site without asking.

Posters and production images remain the property of their rights holders. Our image rights page explains where they come from and how to ask us to remove one.

6. Disclaimers and limitation of liability

First Night is provided “as is”. We do our best to keep information accurate and the service available, but we cannot guarantee uninterrupted access or that all show details are correct, so please check dates and times with the venue before you travel. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the service. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have under consumer law, or any liability that cannot be limited by law.

7. Deleting your account

You can delete your account at any time from the Danger zone in your settings, or by contacting us at hello@firstnight.io. Deleting your account permanently removes your profile, diary and the content you posted. The Privacy Policy sets out exactly what is deleted and the few things that are kept without your name. An account whose email address is never verified is deleted about six months after sign-up, after we have warned you. We may also suspend or close accounts that break these terms.

8. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as First Night changes. When we do, we will update the date at the top of this page, and if a change matters we will let members know.

9. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
