John Lithgow was excellent as Roald Dahl. I’d seen him years before in The Magistrate at the National and he was just as compelling here. The set was amazing, essentially splitting a full house in two across the stage, and the whole play was incredibly tense. It gave a fascinating insight into Dahl and the contradictions in his personality, although there’s something quite sad about confronting the reality behind someone whose stories were such a big part of childhood. Really strong, gripping drama. The post-show talk was a great extra, especially hearing more about the writing process and how the piece came together.
