It felt like the play wanted to use the manhunt and murder trial as a way into a wider discussion about toxic masculinity, but for me it never really worked out what it wanted to say. There were several interesting ideas in there about the man at the centre of the story, the people around him and the environment that shaped him, but they never quite came together into something coherent. The moment that really stayed with me was the blinded police officer’s account, heard by the entire auditorium in complete darkness. It was incredibly moving and a brilliant theatrical idea, but unfortunately much stronger than the play around it.
