A notorious killer tells his version of the events that made him the subject of Britain’s biggest manhunt.
Robert Icke revisits the 2010 case of Raoul Moat, who went on the run after shooting three people shortly after leaving prison. Drawing extensively on Moat’s own testimony, the play moves inside his account of himself while setting it against the violence he committed and the people caught up in the ensuing manhunt.
A tense, deliberately uncomfortable piece of documentary-inflected drama centred on one man’s anger, paranoia and capacity for self-justification. Direct address, video and sound place the audience close to Moat’s perspective without asking them to accept it, while the wider story raises questions about masculinity, violence, class and what it means to try to understand someone without excusing them.
