The story
Michael Bennett's musical, with music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban and a book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, grew out of taped sessions in which real Broadway dancers talked about their lives. At a final audition, the director Zach questions each hopeful in turn, drawing out memories of childhood, family, ambition and the fear of a career ending. Among them is Cassie, once a featured performer, who has come back to ask for a place in the line. It won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
In the room
Monologues and confessional songs alternate with ensemble dance routines, among them "I Can Do That", "At the Ballet", "What I Did for Love" and the closing number "One".
Good fit if you like
