Play
A Prayer for My Daughter
Over one long Fourth of July night in a squalid New York squad room, two detectives try to break two men held for a killing.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Thomas Babe's 1978 play sets the hard-drinking sergeant Kelly and his philosophising partner Jack against Sean, an older suspect with a guru's manner, and Jimmy, the volatile young addict he treats almost as a son, after an elderly woman is murdered. As drink, drugs, violence and argument blur the line between questioners and suspects, Kelly keeps taking calls from his daughter, who is threatening to kill herself.
In the room
A four-hander played out on a single set in close to real time, naturalistic and violent but heightened by poetic and philosophical argument, and darkly funny in places.
Good fit if you like
police interrogation dramas, stories about fathers and daughters and tough American plays of the 1970s.
