Beverly and Laurence invite their new neighbours Angela and Tony over for drinks, alongside Susan, whose teenage daughter Abigail is holding a party nearby. As Beverly presses alcohol, cigarettes and unwanted advice on her guests, polite conversation exposes marital resentment, social insecurity and a desperate need to appear sophisticated.
