Play
After Agincourt
Pistol, the last of Falstaff's old tavern crew still standing, comes home from the Battle of Agincourt with nobody left to drink with and plenty to say about glory.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Peter Mottley's solo play picks up Pistol, the swaggering soldier of Shakespeare's Henry IV and Henry V, after the English victory in France. Bardolph, Nym, the Boy, Falstaff and Mistress Quickly are dead or gone, and the king who once drank with them has turned his back on the tavern. Alone with his memories, Pistol picks apart the patriotic story of the campaign and asks what honour was worth to the men who paid for it.
In the room
One actor and a bare stage for a little over an hour of storytelling, darker and more mournful than Pistol's bluster in Shakespeare, with only flashes of the old swagger.
Good fit if you like
solo plays, Shakespeare's history plays and stories about the cost of war.
