In 1809, teenage prodigy Thomasina Coverly studies mathematics with her tutor Septimus Hodge while romantic scandals gather around their Derbyshire estate. In the present day, scholars investigate what happened in the same house, assembling incomplete evidence that connects poetry, landscape gardening, scientific ideas and the private lives of people separated by nearly two hundred years.

The play alternates between two time periods until both occupy the stage together, turning intellectual debate, mistaken interpretation and romantic longing into a carefully patterned comedy.
