Musical
Bend It Like Beckham
A teenage footballer from Southall plays for a women's team in secret, knowing her parents want her to study law and marry well.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Based on Gurinder Chadha's 2002 film, the musical follows Jess Bhamra, a gifted British Sikh player who idolises David Beckham, after Jules, the star of a local women's team, recruits her. The secret strains her family, busy preparing for her sister Pinky's wedding, her friendship with Jules and her feelings for the team's young coach, Joe, while the chance of an American scholarship sharpens the clash.
In the room
Howard Goodall's score mixes West End musical-theatre writing with bhangra and Punjabi folk rhythms, set to Charles Hart's lyrics, with comic family scenes and a large wedding number among the ensemble pieces.
Good fit if you like
British Asian family comedy, women's sport and coming-of-age stories with a bhangra beat.
