The story
Billy Elliot is a motherless boy growing up in a County Durham mining community during the 1984 to 1985 strike. Sent to boxing lessons, he discovers ballet instead, but his talent and determination collide with his father's expectations, financial hardship and a community fighting for its livelihood.
In the room
Elton John's score moves between intimate songs, dance-led sequences and large miners' ensemble numbers, setting Billy's private ambition against the collective anger and solidarity of the strike.
Good fit if you like
dance-led storytelling, working-class family drama, coming-of-age stories and political conflict.
