Young Vic · London

A comedian tries to pay tribute to the grandmother who taught him to believe in magic, wonder and goodness.

First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.

Comedy
The story

Jordan Brookes uses the memory of his grandmother Gwendoline Martha Brookes as the starting point for a stand-up show about the person who first sparked his imagination. Her death gives the piece its emotional centre, while Brookes tests how sincerely a comedian can try to honour someone and still make a show out of the attempt.

In the room

Stand-up slips into absurdism rather than settling into a conventional tribute, with Brookes using shifts in comic form to pursue an unusually direct attempt to feel something.

Good fit if you like

absurdist stand-up, personal comedy, formal unpredictability and shows built around memory and grief.
