Musical
Brigadoon
Two men lost in the Scottish Highlands follow the sound of music to a village missing from their map, which appears for only one day every hundred years.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Tommy Albright and Jeff Douglas arrive in the Highland village on the day Jean MacLaren is to marry Charlie Dalrymple. Tommy, engaged to a woman back home, is drawn to Jean's older sister Fiona, while Harry Beaton is heartbroken over the wedding. The schoolmaster, Mr Lundie, explains the rule that holds the place together: if any resident leaves, the village vanishes for ever.
In the room
A serious central romance runs alongside a lighter comic subplot, and the story sets the pull of city life against the simplicity of a remote Highland community. It dates from 1947, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe.
