Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
A family birthday becomes a reckoning as a troubled marriage, a looming inheritance and years of buried truths collide under one roof.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Tennessee Williams' Pulitzer Prize-winning play centres on Brick and Maggie Pollitt as they join Brick's family to celebrate his father Big Daddy's birthday. With Brick retreating into alcohol and their marriage under strain, the gathering becomes a battle over love, loyalty, inheritance and the stories the family tells itself.
In the room
A tense, dialogue-driven family drama full of shifting alliances and confrontations. Williams moves between an intimate portrait of a damaged marriage and a wider struggle inside the Pollitt family, exploring grief, desire, denial and the pressure to live up to other people's expectations.
Good fit if you like
American classics, psychologically intense family dramas, complicated marriages, morally messy characters and plays where long-held resentments gradually force their way into the open.
