The band is already playing when you walk in, and the night runs as a Scottish dance, with the audience invited onto the floor between chapters of one family's story.

First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.

The story

Scott Gilmour and Claire McKenzie, the Scottish writing team who work as Noisemaker, wrote the book, music and lyrics. A caller from a long line of callers leads the evening, and as the dances go on he tells how his family has kept the ceilidh going down the generations. Scenes and songs alternate with the dances themselves, so the show works as both a musical and a party.

In the room

Actor-musicians playing live, a run of reels and jigs for anyone who wants to join in, with no experience needed, and the option to stay seated and watch.

Good fit if you like

folk music, actor-musician shows and theatre you can take part in.
