The story
Mike Bartlett's stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning film tells the true story of Harold Abrahams, a driven Jewish student at Cambridge facing the snobbery and antisemitism of the establishment, and Eric Liddell, a devout Scottish Christian whose family expects him to return to missionary work in China. Their parallel paths through the early 1920s converge on the Paris Games, where faith, duty and ambition collide.
In the room
A play with music that sets the two stories side by side so each comments on the other, with Vangelis's film theme and Gilbert and Sullivan linking the scenes and the races at its centre.
Good fit if you like
true sporting stories, questions of faith and principle and 1920s Britain.
