Play
Doctor Faustus
A gifted scholar bored with everything he has mastered signs a contract in his own blood: twenty-four years of a devil's service for his soul.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Christopher Marlowe's tragedy follows Faustus of Wittenberg, who turns to magic, summons the devil Mephistopheles and strikes his bargain with Lucifer. He spends the years on tricks, sightseeing and practical jokes at the courts of popes and emperors, while a Good Angel and a Bad Angel argue over whether he can still repent and the end of the bargain draws closer.
In the room
Blank-verse tragedy broken up by prose clowning, with a pageant of the Seven Deadly Sins and other morality-play touches framing an episodic middle of farce and spectacle.
Good fit if you like
Elizabethan tragedy, deals with the devil and stories about ambition outrunning wisdom.
