Opera
Don Giovanni
A nobleman whose servant keeps a list of his conquests kills a woman's father in a duel, then carries on seducing as the people he has wronged close in.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte's two-act opera, first performed in Prague in 1787, follows Don Giovanni, a licentious nobleman, and Leporello, the servant who grumbles about him. When Giovanni kills the Commendatore, who dies defending his daughter Donna Anna, her fiancé Don Ottavio swears vengeance. Donna Elvira, whom Giovanni abandoned, is after him too, and he pursues the peasant girl Zerlina on the day of her wedding to the jealous Masetto.
In the room
Styled a dramma giocoso, it moves between comedy, melodrama and the supernatural. Its set pieces include Leporello's catalogue aria, which tallies his master's conquests country by country, and the seduction duet Là ci darem la mano.
Good fit if you like
comedy with a dark edge, a master and servant double act and an unrepentant seducer at the centre of the story.
