The story
Armando Iannucci and Sean Foley adapt Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 black comedy for the stage, following the political and military chaos unleashed when an American general independently orders a nuclear strike on the Soviet Union. As officials race to reverse the decision, bureaucracy, bravado and Cold War logic push the world closer to catastrophe.
In the room
A large-scale black comedy that treats nuclear annihilation with deadpan absurdity rather than solemnity. The stage version stays close to Kubrick’s mixture of military farce and political satire, with rapid shifts between the War Room, an American air base and a bomber in flight. Its humour is broad, bleak and deliberately uncomfortable.
Good fit if you like
political satire, very dark comedy, escalating farce and stories about supposedly rational institutions behaving absurdly.
