Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors
A nervous English estate agent travels to Transylvania to meet a mysterious, self-satisfied client, who soon sets his sights on the agent's fiancée.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen's comedy retells Bram Stoker's horror story with a Gen Z, pansexual Count Dracula in the middle of an existential crisis. Jonathan Harker's trip to Transylvania puts his fiancée, the young earth scientist Lucy Westfeldt, in the Count's path, and she proves a match for him. Around them are the vampire hunter Van Helsing, the insect-loving Renfield and the psychiatrist Wallace Westfeldt, whose country house is also a loosely run asylum.
In the room
Five actors share every role between them, swapping costumes and characters at speed, in a 90-minute comedy played without an interval. The humour is camp and gender-bending, with a fondness for goth style.
Good fit if you like
camp comedy, quick-change multi-role performances and horror classics turned inside out.
