A father's disappointments tighten around his Pittsburgh family.
In 1950s Pittsburgh, Troy Maxson works collecting rubbish while carrying the frustration of a baseball career restricted by racial barriers and age. At home, his son Cory hopes football will offer a different future, but Troy's determination to protect him becomes controlling, placing pressure on his marriage to Rose and the family they have built.
