In Pittsburgh in 1904, Aunt Esther welcomes Citizen Barlow, a young man from Alabama searching for a new life, and Solly Two Kings, who was born into slavery and later scouted for the Union Army. Aunt Esther guides Citizen towards the City of Bones on a spiritual journey shaped by memory, responsibility and the continuing weight of slavery.
The play combines early twentieth-century realism with lyrical and spiritual storytelling, placing personal renewal inside a wider African American history.
