Conor McPherson's musical unfolds in a Duluth guesthouse in 1934, where the struggling Laine family and a succession of travellers confront debt, pregnancy, illness, love and uncertain futures, accompanied by songs drawn from across Bob Dylan's catalogue.
A melancholy ensemble drama rather than a conventional jukebox musical. Dylan's songs reveal the characters' inner lives rather than simply narrating the plot, with folk, gospel and Americana-inflected arrangements giving the piece an intimate, haunted atmosphere.
