The story

Josephine, daughter of Captain Corcoran aboard HMS Pinafore, loves the sailor Ralph Rackstraw, but her father expects her to marry Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty. Their romance runs into the rigid class hierarchy the opera sets out to mock, while Sir Joseph’s own rhetoric about equality complicates the rules everyone is supposed to obey.

In the room

A two-act comic opera built from romantic complications, nautical ensemble scenes and satire aimed at class, rank and naval authority.

Good fit if you like

social satire, mismatched lovers, nautical settings and comic opera.
