Hadestown reimagines the Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice and Hades and Persephone as one intertwined story. When hunger and hardship drive Eurydice to accept Hades’ offer of security in his underground industrial kingdom, Orpheus follows her below and attempts to win her freedom. Anaïs Mitchell’s musical explores love, doubt and the struggle to imagine a better world through a folk, blues and jazz-inflected score, with the stage production developed by director Rachel Chavkin.
A haunting, atmospheric retelling of an ancient tragedy, staged like a concert in a smoky, dreamlike world. The story balances romance and myth with ideas about power, exploitation and collective hope, while its narrator reminds us that even a familiar ending can still be worth singing again.
