Incident at Vichy

Arcola Theatre · London · From 15 January

In occupied France, a group of people are detained without explanation and wait as each person is called away for questioning.

First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.

Drama
The story

France, 1942. A group of detainees cling to the hope that their arrest is merely an identity check, but that explanation becomes harder to sustain as they are summoned one by one. The play tracks the growing recognition that their detention is connected to who they are, turning enforced waiting into a test of fear, responsibility and how people respond when injustice becomes impossible to ignore.

In the room

A concentrated ensemble drama in which tension rises as detainees are called away one by one and reassuring explanations gradually collapse around those left behind.

Good fit if you like

historical drama, moral pressure, enclosed settings and stories about complicity in the face of persecution.
