The story
Simon Stone brings Chekhov’s Ivanov into the present day, following a man caught between mounting debts, an increasingly unhappy marriage and a wife struggling with serious illness. Nikolai’s exhaustion and dissatisfaction ripple through the family and friends around him as he tries to work out whether the life he has made can still be lived in.
In the room
A contemporary tragicomedy about burnout, marriage, money and the uncomfortable gap between the person someone hoped to become and the person they actually are. Stone approaches Chekhov as a recognisable modern family drama, finding comedy in bad behaviour, social awkwardness and people talking around feelings they are considerably less good at confronting.
Good fit if you like
Chekhov, dysfunctional families, morally messy characters, dark comedy and modern versions of classics that make old emotional problems feel very current.
