First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Kathy, a library assistant, and her unemployed best friend Stella record their podcast in Kathy's mum's garage. When bestselling true-crime author Felicia Taylor, their heroine, is killed, the pair are questioned as witnesses and decide to catch the killer themselves, hoping the case will make them famous. The investigation puts their safety and friendship at risk. Book and lyrics are by Jon Brittain, music and lyrics by Matthew Floyd Jones.
In the room
A comic murder mystery with a pop-leaning score, songs packed tight with jokes, and a satirical eye on podcast culture and the appetite for gruesome true crime. It grew from a 70-minute Fringe show into a full two-act musical.
