The story

Fred Graham directs, produces and stars in a musical version of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, with his ex-wife Lilli Vanessi as his leading lady. Lilli is furious that Fred is pursuing Lois Lane, who plays Bianca, while Lois's gambler boyfriend Bill has signed a $10,000 IOU in Fred's name. When two gangsters arrive to collect, the backstage rows and the onstage comedy start to blur.

In the room

A play within a play, with scenes from the Shakespeare production alternating with the backstage story. Cole Porter's score draws on Italian Renaissance music, Verdi's operas, blues and the Viennese waltz; the book is by Bella and Samuel Spewack.

Good fit if you like
