Drama
The story

Set near the end of the Ancien Régime, the opera follows a shifting web of ambition, strategy and survival across different levels of French society. Loosely based on a novella, it treats power as a game in which social position can change quickly and every move carries consequences.

In the room

An opéra-comique performed in French with English surtitles and newly created English dialogue, accompanied by a chamber orchestra and shaped around wit, intrigue and social manoeuvring.

Good fit if you like

historical intrigue, social power games, chamber-scale opera and French-language performance.
