DramaRomance

The story

Christopher Hampton's play adapts Pierre Choderlos de Laclos's novel, originally told through letters. The Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont use seduction and calculated charm to gain influence over others. Their shared appetite for manipulation places other people's relationships at risk, while growing hostility between the two threatens to undo the alliance that once served them both.

In the room

The drama is driven by shifting allegiances and the gap between what characters say and what they intend. Courtship becomes a form of social combat, with private desires carrying consequences beyond the people pursuing them.

Good fit if you like

verbal sparring, aristocratic intrigue, romantic manipulation and morally compromised characters.
