Jean Valjean rebuilds his life after nineteen years in prison, but police inspector Javert pursues him for breaking parole. Valjean's promise to care for the orphaned Cosette draws him into a wider story of poverty, love and political unrest in nineteenth-century France, culminating around a student uprising in Paris.
The musical is almost entirely sung through, using recurring melodies and a large ensemble to connect intimate moral choices with street conflict, revolution and social inequality.
