The story

Rod Beacham's one-man play, from an idea by the actor Philip York, puts the media magnate Robert Maxwell in front of the audience to argue his own case near the end of his life. He ranges from his teenage escape from Czechoslovakia in 1939 and his war service to the publishing business that made him rich, his rivalry with Rupert Murdoch and the debts and raided pension funds closing in around him.

In the room

A solo performer addresses the audience directly, part self-defence and part memoir, as ringing telephones interrupt Maxwell mid-deal and bring his business world into the room.

Good fit if you like

solo performances, real-life business scandals and portraits of larger-than-life self-made men.
