The story

In 1930s Germany, a woman puts on her dead husband’s trousers and never takes them off. As dictatorship, war, hunger and humiliation reshape the country around her, she fights to stay alive through more than thirty years of political upheaval. Manfred Karge’s play follows the survival of Ella and Max as the surrounding world repeatedly changes.
