Martin Guerre
A returning husband is welcomed by the wife he abandoned.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
In sixteenth-century France, Martin Guerre leaves his village and his unhappy marriage to Bertrande without explanation. Years later, a man returns claiming to be Martin, and Bertrande accepts him as the husband she had hoped for. Their renewed relationship unsettles a community already divided by religion, suspicion and competing versions of the past.
Large ensemble numbers and recurring musical themes place the central identity mystery inside a village shaped by religious conflict, public judgement and collective suspicion.
historical mysteries, disputed identities, village communities and sweeping ensemble musicals.
