The story

During one night in the First World War, young soldier Tommo Peaceful looks back over his childhood in rural Devon and his relationship with his older brother Charlie. Memories of school, family, first love and village life lead towards the brothers' experiences in the trenches, where loyalty to one another collides with military authority.

In the room

The story moves between childhood memory and wartime experience, contrasting the rhythms of rural family life with the fear, confusion and rigid discipline of the front.

Good fit if you like

wartime stories, brotherly relationships, memory-framed narratives and rural childhoods.
