Premiered 2022 at Neil Simon Theatre

Inside rehearsals for the Dangerous World Tour, Michael Jackson pushes himself and his collaborators towards a spectacle nobody around him thinks is possible.

First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.

Drama

The story

Lynn Nottage’s jukebox musical uses preparations for Jackson’s 1992 tour as a frame for episodes from his childhood, career and creative life, built around more than 25 songs.

In the room

Precision-heavy choreography, large-scale concert sequences and rapid shifts between rehearsal room and memory. Christopher Wheeldon’s staging is driven by movement and spectacle, while the story concentrates on Jackson’s artistic process, family history and pursuit of perfection.

Good fit if you like

Pop-history musicals, dance-led theatre, backstage stories and technically ambitious spectacle.
