Set in December 1170, the verse drama follows Archbishop Thomas Becket after his return from seven years in France during the reign of Henry II. With his assassination approaching, Becket faces an inward struggle over martyrdom, faith and pride, questioning whether accepting death for a sacred cause can itself become a form of personal ambition.
A historical verse drama centred as much on Becket's internal argument as on the political danger surrounding him, with martyrdom treated as a spiritual and moral conflict.
