First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Dave Malloy's Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 turns part of Tolstoy's War and Peace into an electropop opera. Young Natasha is waiting for her fiancé to return from the war when she is drawn towards the scheming Anatole. Meanwhile Pierre, a family friend caught in a crisis of his own, struggles to find direction as the relationships around him become increasingly complicated.
In the room
The score moves between electropop, Russian folk music, rock and Broadway-style ballads. A nineteenth-century story of romance and uncertainty unfolds through musical styles that refuse to stay in one period.
Good fit if you like
adventurous ensemble musicals, tangled relationships and classic literature retold through contrasting musical styles.
