No Man's Land
Two ageing men drink through a night of uncertain memories.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
Spooner meets Hirst in a London pub and follows him home, where the two men continue drinking and circle around questions of friendship, literary success and a past they may or may not share. Their conversation becomes harder to trust as memory, invention and social power shift between them, particularly when Hirst's younger associates enter the house.
Elliptical dialogue, long pauses and sudden changes of authority create a comedy of menace in which stories are repeatedly revised and certainty remains out of reach.
ambiguous memories, verbal power games, confined settings and unsettling comedy.
