The story
Othello, a general in Venice's service, has secretly married Desdemona, whose father opposes the match. Sent to Cyprus on military duty, he is joined by his wife and the officers around him. Among them is Iago, furious at being passed over for promotion, who begins persuading Othello that Desdemona has been unfaithful, drawing her innocent attempts to help another officer into his deception.
In the room
Shakespeare builds the tragedy through insinuation and the misuse of apparently ordinary evidence, including a handkerchief. The widening gap between what the audience knows and what Othello believes drives the tension.
Good fit if you like
psychological manipulation, intimate betrayals and tragedies about trust and jealousy.
