Harold Pinter Theatre · London

Tessa knows how to win sexual-assault cases for the defence, until her own experience changes what the law looks like.

First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.

Drama
The story

Tessa is a barrister who specialises in defending men accused of sexual assault and trusts the legal system she works within. After she is sexually assaulted herself, that certainty is transformed. The play follows the collision between her professional understanding of evidence and the reality of becoming a complainant in a system where the burden of proof is decisive.

In the room

A one-woman legal drama focused on a single perspective, using Tessa’s shift from advocate to complainant to examine how sexual-assault trials operate.

Good fit if you like

courtroom drama, solo storytelling, legal systems and morally charged shifts in perspective.
