Young artists fight to create lives under the shadow of AIDS.

First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.

DramaRomance
The story

In New York's East Village, a group of impoverished artists and outsiders try to sustain their work, relationships and chosen family while facing rent, addiction and HIV/AIDS. At the centre are filmmaker Mark, musician Roger and the people around them, each deciding what it means to live meaningfully when stability and time cannot be assumed.

In the room

Jonathan Larson's rock score moves between sung dialogue, anthems and intimate confession, using an ensemble structure to follow several overlapping relationships across a year.

Good fit if you like

rock musicals, chosen-family stories, bohemian New York and ensemble dramas shaped by HIV/AIDS.
