The story
William Nicholson's play follows C.S. Lewis, living a sheltered life with his brother Warnie in 1950s Oxford, and Joy Davidman Gresham, the American writer whose letters bring her to England with her young son Douglas. A marriage of convenience, made so that she can stay in Britain, turns into a love Lewis never expected, and it is tested when Joy falls seriously ill.
In the room
Episodic scenes are framed by Lewis's lectures on pain, given straight to the audience, so his tidy arguments about suffering are set against what happens in his own life.
Good fit if you like
true love stories, questions of faith and grief, and witty, restrained British drama.
