Play
Shakespeare in Love
Broke, blocked and owing a theatre owner a comedy, a young Will Shakespeare finds his muse in a woman disguised as a boy actor.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Lee Hall's stage adaptation of the Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard screenplay is set in London in 1593, where Viola de Lesseps, a merchant's daughter who dreams of acting at a time when women do not perform on London's public stages, disguises herself to win a part in Will's new play. Their secret affair feeds straight into the play as it becomes Romeo and Juliet, while her father's match with the cold Lord Wessex, theatre rivalries and the censor close in.
In the room
A romantic comedy about putting on a play, for a large company with live period music, swordfights, backstage farce, a running gag about a dog and plenty of borrowed Shakespeare lines.
Good fit if you like
backstage comedies, Elizabethan London and romance with literary in-jokes.
