Shetland Nordic Saga
A Jarl’s daughter becomes an outcast in Norse Shetland.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
In the Norse period, Auslag, daughter of the Jarl, finds herself cast out by her own community. Marjolein Robertson’s play follows her within a Shetland story that draws on both historical truth and myth, placing one woman’s exclusion against the beliefs and power structures of the islands.
The hour-long drama blends saga-like myth with historical material, using a remote island community and Norse social order as its setting.
Nordic sagas, island history, mythic storytelling and female outsiders.
