First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.

Satire
The story

The play follows three interracial couples undertaking Antebellum Sexual Performance Therapy after the Black partners begin struggling to experience arousal or pleasure with their white partners. The first act uses role-play on a pre-Civil War plantation; later acts shift to present-day group therapy, where the couples confront race, privilege, identity and the dynamics inside their relationships.

In the room

A three-act satire that changes form, moving from historical sexual role-play into contemporary group therapy and direct confrontation between the couples.

Good fit if you like

provocative satire, interracial relationship drama, formal shifts and uncomfortable conversations about power.
