Sunny Afternoon
A British band finds fame as the country moves out of the cautious 1950s and into the upheaval of the 1960s.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Sunny Afternoon traces the rise of The Kinks as their music finds an audience in a rapidly changing Britain. The musical follows the band's climb towards stardom alongside the excitement and difficulties that come with success. With music and lyrics by Ray Davies and a book by Joe Penhall, it tells the group's story through the songs associated with their career.
In the room
Ray Davies's music is central to the storytelling, set against the social shifts between two decades. The tone moves between the thrill of recognition and the strain of life in a successful band.
