Royal Court Theatre · London · From 14 November

A schoolteacher trains unlikely astronauts for Zambia’s own space race.

First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.

HistoryDrama
The story

In Zambia in 1964, a schoolteacher gathers a group of misfit dreamers and begins preparing them for space. While the world’s major powers compete to reach the moon, this small team pursues an audacious national ambition of its own. The play draws on the true, and sometimes disputed, story of the Zambian Space Programme.

In the room

History is treated with a playful “true-ish” freedom, combining the scale of the space race with an ensemble of outsiders training far from its recognised centres.

Good fit if you like

overlooked history, space-race stories, idealistic outsiders and fact mixed with invention.
